Venturing Crew Orientation: Venturing is a program where high-school age boys and girls take a lead role in organizing and running their own high adventure activities. This multimedia program, covers specific leadership skills in program planning, money-earning, and running effective committees. This presentation should be a first step in training effective crew leadership."

Venturing Leadership Skills Course

The Venturing Leadership Skills Course (VLSC) was developed to help teach young adults the attitudes and skills that good leaders demonstrate. Practicing and mastering these skills will help enable Venturers to have positive leadership experiences. VLSC is a series of leadership modules divided into 4 categories: Vision, Communication, Organization, and Synergism.

Completion of this course is required for the Venturing Silver Award and for the Venturing Advisor Award of Merit.

Kodiak Leadership Training Course

Previously called the Nature of Leadership Treks.

Background and Purpose

Leadership and service to others are two key tenants of Venturing, the Boy Scouts of America¹s fast growing teenage program. Combine these two elements and you get the concept of "the servant leader." Servant leadership as a philosophy teaches that the leader works with and through a team to accomplish the mission.

Rather than just talking about leadership, Venturing through the new Kodiak course, teaches useable, relevant leadership skills that every teen can use.

Kodiak Methods

Challenging outdoor trek to use nature as a classroom (Not indoors).
May be offered by a council, a district, or even a crew. Requires council approval.
Team taught by two instructors per crew of 5-8.
Only 5 leadership skills taught called Commissions.
Can be offered as weeklong or two weekends.
Uses hands-on learning approach with very short presentations.
Constant reinforcement.
Creates a leadership fraternity.

Kodiak X

Kodiak X is the final step in Venturing's Nature of Leadership series, which began with learning introductory leadership skills in the Venturing Leadership Skills Course, followed by Kodiak, a much more in-depth leadership course done in conjunction with a trek or trip. Kodiak X is a weekend leadership challenge course designed to test a Venturer's leaderships skills learned in Kodiak. It is a fun and funky weekend!

Youth Protection: Personal Safety Awareness

This training deals with issues facing our young adults today. The vignette covers acquaintance rape, peer sexual harassment, stalking, and two new additions in 2007--suicide and Internet safety. This cutting-edge training addresses head-on the issues facing youth.

The BSA high-adventure program directory is a service to all units desiring to locate a high-adventure program opportunity at any local council. The directory lists all council-operated high-adventure trekking programs that span at least five nights and six days. A few programs of lesser duration are included as specialty adventure programs.
