Got Wood Badge?
"The most fun you've had since you were 12 years old!"
Got
Wood Badge? Well no, at least not in the Los Padres Council
for
the forseeable future. So, if you
are really
serious of about advancing your leadership training in Scouting
by going to Wood Badge and I hope a good number of our local
volunteers
are
serious,
you will
need
drive to another council. "The most fun you've had since
you were 12 years old!!!" is not available locally. That
is a shameful but true fact. If you are serious about developing
your leadership skills and
your
personal
growth
potential then
Wood Badge is a GREAT learning opportunity.
Besides,
it
is
just a fundamentally
great experience.
Here is a statement on the purpose of Wood
Badge taken from the BSA Fact Sheet on Wood Badge:
Purpose
As a result of attending Wood Badge, participants will be
able to
View Scouting globally, as a family of interrelated, values-based
programs that provide age-appropriate activities for youth.
Recognize the contemporary leadership concepts utilized
in corporate America and leading government organizations
that are relevant to our values-based movement.
Apply the skills they learn from their participation as
a member of a successful working team.
Revitalize their commitment by sharing in an overall inspirational
experience that helps provide Scouting with the leadership
it needs to accomplish its mission on an ongoing basis.
If you closely read the Purpose of the Wood
Badge training listed above you will find the following words
that
caught my attention - View Scouting globally, contemporary
leadership concepts, successful working team, and an overall
inspirational
experience. From these words you could say, Wood Badge helps
you view Scouting from a more global perspective. Wood Badge
teaches you contemporary leadership concepts. Wood Badge
give you experience in developing a successful working team.
And
finally, Wood Badge is an overall inspirational experience.
These are all things I expect most good people would like
to experience. The Wood Badge experience can change you as
a person,
I know it did me. But, it changes you even more when you
serve on staff. So I hope you will look into attending Wood
Badge this year and consider
serving on staff in the future. We need to keep growing the
potential pool of eligible Wood Badge staff members, if we
ever expect to hold a Wood Badge course again locally. Wood
Badge is good for you and very good for Scouting! Attending
Wood Badge is an important commitment to improving Scouting
locally and it is more importantly a profound investment
in yourself.
Wood Badge only costs $250 to attend and
is a true value to all those who attend. If you went into
the real world and
tried to find
a similar training opportunity to the BSA Wood Badge course
you would probably spend over $2,000 to take the training.
I did some quick surfing on the internet to see if there
was any substance to this oft referenced cost comparison.
Here
is
what I found in a simple Google inquiry:

It appears the $250 to $2,000 comparison is very
valid. Of course if I were to spend my money to attend a non-Scouting
training on leadership it would be the
SERVANT LEADERSHIP FOR A FLAT
WORLD,
The 17th
Annual
International Conference of the Robert K. Greenleaf Center
for Servant Leadership being held June 28-30 in Dallas, Texas.
This conference is linked to the father of contemporary leadership
concepts , Robert K. Greenleaf and his leadership philosophy
centered around the concept of servant leadership. Since both
the National
Youth
Leadership
Training
and Wood
Badge courses are are grounded in the concept of servant leadership
this would be an ideal conference to expand my understanding
of these two advanced leadership training programs of the Boy
Scouts of America. The Servant Leadership for a Flat World
seminar is only $695 plus transportation, food and accommodations.
The Sequoia Council in Fresno, CA is hosting
a Wood Badge course in

on Shaver Lake. Shaver Lake is about 220 miles from Santa
Maria or around 4.5 hours driving time. Probably a better trip
to
make with a friend also attending the course, instead of
all by yourself. —Rick

The World Friendship Fund
How It Works, One Little Boy at a Time
The World Friendship Fund was created to help Scouts in other
countries develop their Scouting program. Throughout the year,
the World Friendship Fund receives contributions from individuals,
Cub Scout packs, Wood Badge courses, and camp schools. One of
the most heartwarming examples of a World Friendship Fund collection
began at an auction for the World Friendship Fund at Philmont
Training Center.
The International Division of the Boy Scouts of America conducts
an international Scouting conference every two years at Philmont.
One of the activities is a silent auction to raise money for
the World Friendship Fund. It was at this auction that a little
Cub Scout by the name of Cory Anderson first heard of the World
Friendship Fund. At the auction, Cory saw a patch he could not
resist. Time and again, he went back and increased his bid for
this patch. At the end of the bidding, he was in danger of being
outbid. Seeing the young Scout's desire to have the patch, the
Scouter made a very generous offer to the boy: He could have
the patch if he promised to go home and conduct a collection
at his council for the World Friendship Fund. Cory Anderson kept
his word and organized a collection for the World Friendship
Fund. He collected $65.
Little Cory Anderson is what the World Friendship Fund is all
about: nickels and dimes collected to help Scouts in other countries
have the opportunity to join in Scouting.
If you would like to conduct a World Friendship Fund collection,
let the International Division assist you. There is a new DVD
available as well as posters and labels for collection cans.
Let Cory Anderson be an inspiration to all of us!

The
50th JOTA in 2007
The largest annual World Organization of the Scout
Movement (WOSM) event, the Jamboree-On-The-Air (JOTA) will
be held this year for the 50th time during the weekend of
19, 20 and 21 October 2007.
The JOTA is an annual event in which about 500,000 Scouts
and Guides all over the world make contacts with each other
by means of amateur radio. It is a real Jamboree during which
Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared, thus
contributing to the world brotherhood of Scouting.

Children's Comments About Angels
I only know the names of two angels. Hark and Harold.
Gregory, 5
I hear angels all the time in my dreams. And I'm sticking
with that no matter how many people tell me I'm crazy.
Molly, 8 (I like this kid!)
Everybody's got it all wrong. Angels don't wear halos anymore.
I forget why but scientists are working on it.
Olive, 9
It's not easy to become an angel! First, you die. Then you
go to heaven then there's still the flight training to go through.
And then you got to agree to wear those angel clothes.
Matthew, 9
My guardian angel helps me with math, but he's not much good
for science.
Henry, 8
Angels don't eat, but they drink milk from holy cows.
Jack, 6
Angels talk all the way while they're flying you up to heaven.
The basic message is where you went wrong before you got dead.
Daniel, 9
When an angel gets mad, he takes a deep breath and counts
to ten. And when he lets out his breath, somewhere there's
a tornado.
Regan, 10
Angels have a lot to do and they keep very busy. If you lose
a tooth, an angel comes in through your window and leaves money
under your pillow. Then when it gets cold, angels go north
for the winter.
Sara, 6
Angels live in cloud houses made by God and his son, who's
a very good carpenter.
Jared, 8
All angels are girls because they gotta wear dresses and boys
didn't go for it.
Antonia, 9
My angel is my grandma who died last year. She got a big head
start on helping me while she was still down here on earth.
Katelyn, 9
Some of the angels are in charge of helping heal sick animals
and pets. And if they don't make the animals get better, they
help the kid get over it.
Vicki, 8
What I don't get about angels is why, when someone is in love,
they shoot arrows at them.
Sarah
Admit it, they have more insight than most adults!
The Scoutmaster's Minute
They Saved Life
Every year about 200 Scouts earn medals for saving life. A lot of them performed
water rescues. Probably you've read about some of those rescues in the Boys Life
feature called "Scouts in Action".
Do you suppose all those Scouts who saved people from drowning
were great swimmers? No, not necessarily. Some of them may
not have even been very good swimmers because - remember -
you try to reach, throw, or row to a drowning person before
you jump in and swim. Many medals have gone to guys who didn't
swim at all, but who were able to act when everybody else was
panicking, and tossed a rope or reached a pole to the person
in trouble.
We've been practicing the reach, throw and row water rescue
methods. Those of you who have the Lifesaving merit badge also
know the Go method.
So all of us should be prepared to help somebody who is in
trouble in the water. If you're not, practice some more. Then
you'll be ready when you're needed.
